Thumbs up Windows 7 Workaround

Found Win7 Workaround

Sorry for the double-post, but I thought this would be better in a new topic...

Ok, I've got a workaround to get UltraRecall running on Windows 7! These instructions are for Windows 7 build 7077; for earlier builds see below.

You'll need to find and install the Ultra Recall Pro 3.5 that has an UltraRecall.exe version of 3.5.0.0, as shown in "Help > About > Install Info". After installation, right-click the desktop link, select the Compatibility tab and set compatibility mode to "XP Service Pack 3". Ok it. Then launch UE and... it actually works! The compatibility mode settings don't help out any other UR versions I've tried: only 3.5.0.0.

Now time for the disclaimers:

1) I'm not responsible for any data loss incurred by going back to an earlier version of UE; I don't know of any, but always make backups of your URDs!
2) This is only a temporary workaround until Kinook gives us the real Window 7 compatible version.
3) Admins: if this workaround is "outta line" please feel free to remove it. Thanks.

Hope this helps...

- R

PS: Windows 7 7077 seems to be the first build with "XP SP3" in the compat. modes: 7022 doesn't have it. Go MS!

PPS: To get it to work in Windows 7 build 7022 I had to set compatibility to "Windows Vista" - otherwise UE wouldn't even start up. Vista mode might work for 7077 too...

PPPS: I'm sure fond of lists, ain't I?

Smile UR runs in Win 7 RC XP Mode

The new virtualization environment released the same day as the Release Candidate.

I was able to get it installed and running.

UR runs ok in the virtual env.
A little laggy but very usable.

See this post for info about installing the Virtual PC beta.
http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/xp_mode_beta.asp

I'm going to try the XP compatibility tip in the RC.

It's nice to have UR back.

Compatibility mode didn't work for UR 3.5e in Win7 RC.
Same issue with the navigation pane.

I didn't try the other version.

The compatibility solution would probably be preferable to the XP Mode Virtualization solution because the Virtualization is a little laggy (and it's beta software).

But it's much better than no UR. :-)

If you use Virtualisation can you import to UR from applications running in native Window 7, such as Firefox, Thunderbird, and even from Explorer?

Using UR build 3.5.0.0 still works for me with Windows 7 RC (7100)... no freeze in the data explorer pane...

Good point about XP Mode and importing: I don't have a processor with the "VT" option that I can spare for testing, so I haven't tried XP mode yet...

I've now tried the Virtual XP environment and find it quite unusuable with UR; it's far too slow.

That's too bad.
I've been using it in my old patterns (i.e. 8-9 hours a day) for the past week.

UR 3.5e runs ok on:
Lenovo X60 / Win7 32bit / 4GB / 320gb 7200rpm drive.

It would run better natively of course but it's not unusable on my system.
Outline expansion, tab switching and general navigation is just slightly noticeably slower.

Searches are noticeably slower but still useful.

And there are some beta issues with the beta software.

Still, I'll be monitoring this thread for the location of the version that will run in XP Compatibility mode.
I'm sure that will be better all the way around.

Jon, that would be great. I don't think private messaging is working on this forum any more, but I'd be grateful if you could sent it to dave at *** dot co dot uk.

Found an old copy of Standard at PC World.
It's just Standard (fortunately I had purchased a Standard license for a laptop I'm no longer using).

I tried a couple other sites for Pro but they point back to Kinook so they get the latest version.

Direct link to the ZIP

Main page link:

I was able to get this to run following the instructions above.
The desktop shortcut was set to XP sp3 Compatibility. I didn't have to change it.

It takes a long time to start. Probably the compatibility mode kicking in.
After it starts, it runs fine.
