I don't think I said you can change the colour scheme, just the theme. I have not found a way to change the background colours of the panes.

However having said that you can change the theme. There are sixteen to choose from, they are in Tools|Customize then select Options and there is a drop down list called 'Paint theme' then select a theme and press close. 'Office 2010 Black' is the best of the bunch in my opinion but 'Visual Studio 2010' is also pretty good.

Choose the one you think is good.
