Did some more experimenting.

What distinguishes these two layouts is that one shows the Tree, the other doesn't. I've discovered that what makes the difference is the setting in Options > Trees (More) to "set focus to active selection when going to an item". If that is checked, then switching to an item in another tab causes the Tree to appear, if it was not there already. I guess that's part of the "set focus to active selection" action. It's annoying in the way it messes up my carefully set up Displays, but I can see the logic of it.

(Though I wouldn't particularly have thought of switching to another Tab as a "Go To" action...)

The "set focus to selection" option is a very useful one I find in other contexts, but I will probably switch it off if it means messing up the displays.
