I found the solution to my problem, Its not VBP related (as you likely gathered)
problem is that MSBUILD.exe is reading the command line arguments and applying escape characters
so
/p:ABigDirectory="c:\temp\" doesnt work as \" is removed
but
/p:ABigDirectory="c:\temp\\" does work
