If user has option set to combine selected items set
and user selects multiple items to print | priview | details,
prevu indicates multiple items will be printed but on separate pages, each item on its own page.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening, i.e. combined items should print as a single item?

No, but you can export to RTF and uncheck 'Insert page breaks between exported items'.
